About Crush Critic

Hi. I’m The Crush Critic — the person behind every review on this site. “The Crush Critic” is an editorial pen name, this site’s reviewer persona, but the testing behind it is entirely real: real subscriptions, real chat logs, real spreadsheets tracking which app forgot my dog’s name first.

The Site Story

Crush Critic started the way most review sites should but don’t: with frustration. I went looking for an honest comparison of AI companion apps and found two things — press releases dressed up as reviews, and “top 10” lists written by people who had clearly never opened the apps they were ranking. Nobody was answering the questions that actually matter: Does the companion remember anything after week two? What does the subscription really cost once the upsells kick in? Is the image generation as good as the ads, or is that cherry-picked marketing?

So I started answering them myself. I subscribe with my own money, chat daily for weeks — not a ten-minute demo — and take notes like an obsessive: memory recall over time, personality consistency, image and voice quality, pricing traps, content policy surprises, the works. Then I write up what I found, score it against a fixed rubric, and move on to the next one.

What This Site Covers

  • In-depth reviews of AI companion and AI girlfriend/boyfriend platforms, based on paid, multi-week testing
  • Head-to-head comparisons when two platforms compete for the same use case
  • Pricing breakdowns that include the parts the pricing page doesn’t mention
  • Guides on memory, personas, image generation, and getting the most out of these apps

Editorial Independence

This site earns money through affiliate links — that’s disclosed on every review and explained in full on the Affiliate Disclosure page. But the wall between money and scores is absolute: platforms can’t buy a review, can’t preview one, and can’t edit one. I’ve published unflattering reviews of platforms that pay commissions and glowing ones of platforms that pay nothing. The rubric doesn’t know who the partners are.

Reviews Are Opinion

One honest caveat: everything here is editorial opinion, formed from my own testing at a specific point in time. These platforms ship updates constantly — a memory system that impressed me in March can be quietly downgraded by June. I retest and update, but treat every review as a well-documented opinion, not a guarantee. Your experience, your preferences, and your favorite companion’s mood may vary.

Why Trust Us

You shouldn’t trust any reviewer on vibes — including me. So here’s what you can verify:

  • Every score comes from a published, weighted methodology you can read at How We Rate AI Companion Apps — five criteria, fixed weights, same test protocol for every platform.
  • Reviews state when the platform was last tested, and I re-run the full test suite periodically.
  • Affiliate relationships are disclosed everywhere they exist, and the disclosure page explains exactly how the money flows.
  • When I get something wrong, corrections go in the review, dated.

If a review ever seems out of date or off the mark, tell me — the Contact page has the details. Few things motivate a retest like a reader saying “that’s not what the app does anymore.”
